As you know, caffeine is in a lot other foods and drinks than just coffee. Chocolate, tea, energy drinks and bars, cola, and more.
So we thought we’d put together a short cheat sheet on how much caffeine you’re taking in when drinking or eating certain common foods. Take a look below.
First, a bit of health info: most experts believe it’s OK to eat or drink about 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine a day.
Coffee.
This wonderful dark brew has about 95 or so milligrams of caffeine in an 8-ounce cup of coffee. A two-ounce shot of espresso has about 80 mg. Decaf coffee isn’t completely free of caffeine and an 8-ounce cup has about 2 mg.
Tea.
Just like its cousin coffee, the amount of caffeine in tea depends on the type of tea. Black tea has 47 mg of caffeine in it, while herbal teas have 0 milligrams. You may be surprised to learn that green tea is not considered an herbal tea and has 24-45 mg in eight ounces.
Chocolate.
Milk chocolate has about 20 mg of caffeine in 100 grams (which means a typical Hershey bar has about 9 mg). Dark chocolate has more caffeine: about 43 mg in 100 grams. If you want to eat chocolate without caffeine, go with white chocolate; it has 0 mg of caffeine.
Cola.
A 21-ounce cup of dark cola (Pepsi, Coke, Dr. Pepper) has 39 mg of caffeine. Surprisingly, a diet cola has more, about 58 mg in a 21-ounce cup. Clear sodas such as Sprite or 7Up have no caffeine.
Hot chocolate.
This it’s-freezing-outside-I-need-hot-chocolate drink has 5 mg of caffeine in an eight-ounce cup.
Energy drinks.
These have about twice the amount of caffeine as a comparable can of cola. A 12-ounce can of Red Bull contains 111 mg of caffeine, while a 16-ounce can of Monster Energy has 160 mg (the equivalent of 120 mg if it were a 12-ounce can).
Yogurt and ice cream.
Yep, while plain, regular yogurt has 0 mg of caffeine, turn it into frozen chocolate yogurt and you’re eating 2 mg of caffeine with every four ounces (or 4 mg in a cup). The same goes for vanilla or strawberry ice cream: no caffeine. But chocolate ice cream? Four mg of caffeine in half a cup.
Coffee (and its caffeine) has so many health benefits that you owe it to yourself to drink it regularly. Why not give Ubean Coffee a try? You won’t find us in your neighborhood store, however: find the independent distributor nearest you.
