We’ve written before about coffee’s many health benefits: from helping to keep liver disease at bay, to lowering the chances of developing dementia, to even helping you live longer, the brown elixir recently has been shown to have additional health benefits.
Take a look below.
Drinking coffee might reduce your risk of developing melanoma.
Skin cancer comes in three forms: basal cell, squamous and melanoma. Melanoma is the most serious and a January 2015 study found that those who drank at least four or more cups of coffee each day had a 20 percent lower risk of developing this dangerous skin disease. Researchers said they believed coffee may prevent the growth of melanoma by guarding against damage to DNA.
Coffee drinkers may have a decreased chance of developing multiple sclerosis.
Johns Hopkins University researchers found that those who didn’t drink coffee were about 1.5 times more likely to develop MS compared to java lovers who drank at least four cups of coffee each day.
Hate to exercise? Drink more coffee!
No, drinking coffee doesn’t replace exercise: it may make it more enjoyable! The Journal of Applied Psychology reported in August 2014 that cyclists who drank coffee a bit before heading out on the road found the exercise session easier and more enjoyable than those cyclists who didn’t drink any coffee beforehand.
Researchers said they believed the “feel good” hormones serotonin and dopamine found in coffee may have something to do with the boost.
Drink more coffee, work out longer?
Additional research found that caffeine can help one work out longer when jogging or cycling (endurance exercise). It also may boost one’s performance during high intensity workouts. Just two or three cups can have the affect (effective amount depends on body weight and the coffee’s strength).
(Still, be careful how much in advance you drink the coffee because coffee’s diuretic and bowel stimulation properties are well known.)
Sore muscles after working out? Drink coffee!
Two cups of coffee may decrease pain in your muscles after working out by almost half (48 percent.)
Want to get more fiber in your diet? You guessed it: drink coffee!
A brewed cup of coffee can contribute up to 1.8 grams to your fiber intake (the recommended daily amount is 20-38 grams).
Want fewer cavities? You can probably guess the answer. (But it needs to be black.)
Researchers in Brazil discovered that black coffee kills the bacteria that form on your teeth. Adding sugar and milk (and whipped cream) negates this beneficial effect.
