When it comes to opening a business, why not start one with a product you’re passionate about: coffee. Of course, you can open a café or coffee shop but there are other, less expensive options. We discuss them below.
- Café or coffee shop.
We discussed this before, yet it bears repeating: opening a coffee shop/café could be wonderful. Your café could become the hub of your community. Depending on how you envision it, you could offer writers a place to read their works, provide a meeting space for people in your community, offer open mic/poetry reading nights. The sky’s the limit!Yet if your budget is limited, opening a coffee shop or café could be too expensive: start-up costs could range between $80,000 to $250,000 to open.
There are less expensive options of course, including….
- A drive-through coffee “hut.”
You’ve no doubt seen these small drive-up coffee shops where people stop on their commute to or from work (usually on the way to work in the morning). The pros of this are that it should cost a lot less to open than a coffee shop/café: possibly between $35,000 to $80,000. Since most people buy coffee in the morning on the way to their jobs, you conceivably could open in the mornings only, thus keeping your afternoons and evenings free.Possibly the biggest “con” with a drive-up coffee hut is the fact that you will have to choose your location very carefully: if you’re not on a major commuting route and/or if drivers can’t get to your drive-thru easily, you could end up with a hut that sees no business!
- A coffee kiosk.
These are becoming very popular. The cost of start-up is fairly affordable: between $25,000 and $75,000. What’s more, if you find that your first location isn’t profitable, unlike a drive-up coffee hut, you conceivably could move the kiosk to a better location. - A coffee cart.
The beauty of a coffee cart is similar to that of a kiosk, but smaller and more mobile (a good thing if you need to move locations). Start-up costs also are even more reasonable than those of starting a kiosk: about $30,000 for one cart. - Ubean Coffee independent distributor.
