The benefits of coffee are many. What’s more, coffee could benefit alcohol drinkers: drinking just two additional cups of coffee a day might lower the risk of developing cirrhosis of the liver by as much as 44 percent.
Here are more details regarding how and why, below.
Scientists at Southampton University in the United Kingdom in 2016 analyzed the data gathered in nine studies (totalling 432,000 participants) and found that those extra two cups a day could be of real benefit to those at risk for cirrhosis of the liver.
The disease is often fatal and there is no cure, except with a liver transplant. So, as the lead scientist of the study said, it’s “significant” that the chance of developing the disease could be lowered by drinking a “cheap, ubiquitous and well-tolerated beverage.”
Eight of the nine studies found that the increased consumption of coffee (the extra two cups) found the risk of cirrhosis decline.
Cirrhosis of the liver is a hardening and subsequent destruction of liver tissue. The disease kills more than one million people across the globe each year. While many people think of it as an alcoholic’s disease (it can be caused by the excessive consumption of alcohol), it also can develop via a hepatitis inffection, from an immune disorder and from fatty liver disease.
However, a big caveat: if you reglarly overindulge in too much alcohol or unhealthy food, drinking an extra two cups a day of coffee won’t help you. According to the researchers: people can’t expect a couple of cups of coffee to protect them from an excessive lifestyle. Still, it appears that coffee does offer some protection against the development of cirrhosis of the liver.
And, just as a reminder, coffee’s beneficial effects also include lowering the risk of skin cancer as well as the chances of developing diabetes.
Take a look at this infographic: it details many of coffee’s benefits, which include:
- Improved memory.
- Greater alertness.
- Improved focus (unless you drink too much; coffee ca then cause jitters).
- Boosted mood.
- Reduced appetite.
If you’re worried about the potential for developing cirrhosis of the liver, before simply drinking more coffee, have a chat with your doctor. If you’re already drinking six cups of coffee or more a day, your doctor may caution against drinking more.
